Welcome to Pack 917!

We’re a large, active Cub Scout Pack serving the families and neighborhoods around Northfield Elementary in Ellicott City. Our pack is open to both boys and girls, who stay busy all year with a full calendar of adventures—from outdoor skills and camping to service projects and classic Scouting fun.

Through hands‑on experiences, our Cubs build confidence, character, and lifelong skills. They learn by doing, make great friends, and discover what it means to be part of a supportive, values‑driven community.

Brian Sheavly

Cubmaster

Hi! I’m Brian Sheavly, the Cubmaster for Pack 917. Scouting has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—I grew up in the program from Tiger all the way through earning the rank of Eagle Scout. I then spent four summers on camp staff at Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation and became a National Camp School–certified Aquatics Director, helping Scouts to build confidence and skills on the water.

Outside of Scouting, I spent four years as a part‑time adventure guide and experiential education facilitator, leading groups through outdoor challenges and team‑building experiences. Those years contributed to my belief in the power of hands‑on learning, shared adventure, and the kind of growth that happens when kids are encouraged to explore.

I’m thrilled to be back in Scouting, this time with both my daughter and son in the pack. Being part of their journey—and helping create a fun, supportive, and adventure‑filled program for all our families—is something I’m truly excited about.

Ram Sathi

Assistant Cubmaster

I'm Ram Sathi, the Assistant Cubmaster for Pack 917. I am newer to scouting, only starting after joining with my son as a lion during the winter of 2022. We joined scouting, because of my interest in the outdoors, camping, and goal to get some time unplugged from devices

Other than scouting, I enjoy all things science, engineering, woodworking and football. With so many fun adventures centered around these topics from learning how to use tools to exercise and healthy habits. I have had a great time learning and growing with our den, as they learn new skills.

I have been an assistant den leader for the last 3 years, for both my sons. In that role, I have been able to help foster the new scouts as they learn new skills, and discover new topics that interest them. I am excited to do the same thing at the pack level, as the assistant cubmaster.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How often does the pack meet?

Generally youth participate in one den meeting per month and one pack meeting per month. There is at least one additional weekend event each month with some being day outings to others being overnight excursions. Check out our pack calendar to learn more!

Do I need to register before we attend a meeting?

No, we welcome any families interested in joining to attend a pack or den meeting first. If you are interested in coming to a meeting please send the pack an email at pack917ec@gmail.com to let us know. We look forward to meeting you there!

What will my kids need to join?

Scouting America offers lots of scouting apparel items on their website, but the only thing we ask is that youth have a Cub Scout Short-Sleeve Uniform Shirt for pack and den meetings. Parents also have the option to purchase hats, neckerchiefs, or pants, but these are not required. We provide a bin of second hand uniform items at each pack meeting, so make sure you check that out before making any purchases.

We also offer a Pack T-Shirt for youth and adults which can be worn for outings or camping trips. These are available for sale through the pack.

How much does it cost to join?

The following fees are paid directly to Scouting America at the time of registration or renewal. As of the 2025 calendar year, Youth registration fee is $85, Council Registration fee is $75, and Scout Life magazine (optional; strongly recommended for all members) is $15.

The pack also has dues to cover the cost of advancement items and program materials, which is $80 for the first child and $65 for all siblings after that.

Adults interested in joining will be reimbursed upon request for the $65 fee assessed by Scouting America. There are no adult dues to join the pack.
